The urgency of intersectionality

Kimberlé Crenshaw – TED

Now more than ever, it’s important to look boldly at the reality of race and gender bias — and understand how the two can combine to create even more harm. Kimberlé Crenshaw uses the term “intersectionality” to describe this phenomenon; as she says, if you’re standing in the path of multiple forms of exclusion, you’re likely to get hit by both. In this moving talk, she calls on us to bear witness to this reality and speak up for victims of prejudice.

The path to ending systematic racism

Dr. Phillip Atiba Goff, Rashad Robinson, Dr. Bernice King and Anthony D. Romero – TED

In a time of mourning and anger over the ongoing violence inflicted on Black communities by police in the US and the lack of accountability from national leadership, what is the path forward? Sharing urgent insights into this historic moment, Dr. Phillip Atiba Goff, Rashad Robinson, Dr. Bernice King and Anthony D. Romero discuss dismantling the systems of oppression and racism responsible for tragedies like the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and far too many others — and explore how the US can start to live up to its ideals. (This discussion, hosted by head of TED Chris Anderson and current affairs curator Whitney Pennington Rodgers, was recorded on June 3, 2020.)

The Bluest Eye and Beloved

Toni Morrison

You can never go wrong with a book by Toni Morrison. Beloved explores the intergenerational trauma that resulted from slavery, even after it’s been escaped, as well as the trauma that results from living as a second class citizen in the “free” North. The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison’s first novel, tells the story of Pecola, a young African American girl living in America in the years after the depression. Pecola is obsessed with Shirley Temple and believes that to be beautiful one must be white. Morrison is an unparalleled author with a unique ability to make readers empathize and feel the complex emotions of the characters. Also check out other books by Morrison Song of Solomon and Sula.
