SUMMARY:CMN Learn About It: U.S. Senate/Attorney General
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our Civic Mentorship Network “Learn About It” meetings!\nU.S. Senate and State Attorney General: Heidi Heitkamp\nWomen belong in leadership positions\, including you. We at 100 Rural Women want to join you in your journey as you pursue public service positions. Specifically\, providing you with the necessary resources for support. And the most valuable resources are the very women who are making a difference in their communities. Thus\, at these meetings\, women from various public service backgrounds will discuss their paths to leadership and the barriers they’ve overcome. Our goal is to facilitate a mentorship environment that provides you with encouragement and support in your own leadership journey. \n  \nWe will be hosting Heidi Heitkamp on Thursday\, September 15th at 7 AM CT. Heidi is a former U.S. Senator and State Attorney General. Heidi actively serves as a champion for the North Dakotan people. As the Attorney General\, she is remembered for her leadership in the state’s legal efforts to seek damages from tobacco companies. In a similar fashion\, Heidi tackled a number of welfare issues as a U.S. Senator. These issues include but are not limited to affordable health care and human trafficking. Now that Heidi no longer serves in the U.S. Senate or as Attorney General\, she focuses a lot of her attention on the One Country Project. An organization founded by Heidi\, it focuses on addressing the needs and concerns of rural America. \nLearn More About Heidi! \nYou’re invited to hear more from Heidi herself at this Civic Mentorship Network “Learn About It” meeting! \n \nABOUT THE CIVIC MENTORSHIP NETWORK\nThe Civic Mentorship Network is comprised of rural civic leaders who serve as mentors for new women who are pursuing public service and leadership positions. This network provides a coordinated method for aspiring leaders to make person-to-person connections that give access to resources that are valuable to enduring success. At 100 Rural Women\, we find that success in recruiting more rural women to serve in public service leadership roles is essential to keeping our democracy strong. \nABOUT 100 RURAL WOMEN\n100 Rural Women sees a future where more rural women lead positive change for themselves\, their families and communities\, the nation and the world.  We are committed to building leadership through networks\, mentorship\, education\, and civic engagement. Our organization is non-profit and non-partisan.

SUMMARY:September Book Club - In Spite of Heroin
DESCRIPTION:This month we will be reading In Spite of Heroin by Dana Chase! \nRegister for our Book Club! \nBook synopsis\nAn idyllic upbringing\, unconditional love\, and the serenity of the Heartland USA were not enough to shield this close-knit family from heroin. In her moving\, ultimately hopeful narrative of struggle and redemption\, Dana Chase writes unsparingly of how she survived the shock of learning that her beautiful identical twin sons had become heroin addicts and the terror that unfolded as a result. \nChase and her husband returned to North Dakota in 1993 when their twins were ten months old to give them the same benefits she had as a child. But steadfast family values\, and the manageable pace of North Dakota did not work their charm this time around. By the time the boys were twenty they were drug dealers\, heroin addicts\, and felons. \nThis family’s catastrophic status quo included overdoses\, attempted suicide\, court-mandated stays at rehab centers\, and countless cycles of incarceration\, including a federal indictment\, none of which had been anywhere near Chase’s maternal radar. Chase had lived her entire adult life believing ‘what you think about\, you bring about.’ In spite of her innate optimism she wondered… if I wasn’t thinking about it\, how’d I bring it about? \nThis is a cautionary tale that delivers a blunt impact of reality to any parent who believes ‘this can’t happen to our family’. It portrays a courageous mother and her attempts to save her sons from wasted lives and tragic drug-related deaths. \nIn Spite Of Heroin reveals a parent’s nightmare and the struggle of a lifetime. Eminently readable\, In Spite Of Heroin is a shocking true story that readers will sacrifice sleep to finish. \nResources\n\n About the Book\n \n\n\n About the Author\n \n\n\n Book Review\n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:August Book Club - Go Set a Watchman
DESCRIPTION:This month we will be reading Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee! \nRegister for our Book Club! \nBook synopsis\nFrom Harper Lee comes a landmark new novel set two decades after her beloved Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece\, To Kill a Mockingbird. Maycomb\, Alabama. Twenty-six-year-old Jean Louise Finch— “Scout”—returns home from New York City to visit her aging father\, Atticus. Set against the backdrop of the civil rights tensions and political turmoil that were transforming the South\, Jean Louise’s homecoming turns bittersweet when she learns disturbing truths about her close-knit family\, the town and the people dearest to her. Memories from her childhood flood back\, and her values and assumptions are thrown into doubt.  \nFeaturing many of the iconic characters from To Kill a Mockingbird\, Go Set a Watchman perfectly captures a young woman\, and a world\, in a painful yet necessary transition out of the illusions of the past—a journey that can be guided only by one’s conscience. Written in the mid-1950s\, Go Set a Watchman imparts a fuller\, richer understanding and appreciation of Harper Lee. Here is an unforgettable novel of wisdom\, humanity\, passion\, humor and effortless precision—a profoundly affecting work of art that is both wonderfully evocative of another era and relevant to our own times. It not only confirms the enduring brilliance of To Kill a Mockingbird\, but also serves as its essential companion\, adding depth\, context and new meaning to an American classic. \nResources\n\n About the Book\n \n\n\n Author website\n \n\n\n Book Review\n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Rescheduled for later in August- Yoga Informational Sessions: Q&A with Alisa Benson
DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled for later in August to Join us for a Q&A session with Alisa to talk about yoga and her virtual yoga classes. \nQ&A description\nMaybe you’ve said one version or another of this to yourself in the past. I can’t do yoga because… \nI’m not flexible \nI don’t have the right body or the right clothes \nI’m out of shape \nI’ll do it wrong \n  \n“If you can breathe\, you can do yoga.”  \n  \nThis is something Alisa\, our incredible yoga instructor often says to yoga-wary people. There is a common perception that yoga requires a particular body shape\, flexibility\, or special clothing. One of the aspects of teaching that she enjoys most is dispelling the myth that yoga is for “bendy people.” \nHer teaching is rooted in the belief that yoga is for EveryBody. It is not about how you look\, but rather\, what you feel. Yoga is a practice of quieting the mind so we can feel less scattered and more grounded in life off the mat. Her classes emphasize stability\, and intentional movement that is linked to the breath. \nAlisa’s goal as a teacher is to create a space that is welcoming\, safe\, fun\, and supportive as students explore their practice. The community that is built through the regular practice of yoga is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching. Through our connection to self we are better able to connect to one another and the world around us.  \nIn these sessions\, we encourage questions for those who haven’t been to class and are curious to learn more\, as well as comments from those who have about their experience thus far as we move into more virtual yoga classes later in the summer. We’ll also talk more about what yoga should be; a space to be present with yourself and your classmates\, a space to cultivate the reminder that we can only control what we can control\, a space to uplift\, support\, relax\, and restore\, but most importantly\, whatever you need it to be for yourself in the moment.  \nCome join us! We’ll be offering different times each week so don’t worry if a block of time doesn’t work for you. As always\, feel free to reach out if you have questions. See you in a meeting soon 🙂 \n  \nMeet the Instructor!
